Quick DIY prototype on STM32F103 for reading digital linear encoders

Projects / Measurements, sensors and data acquisition

Digital linear encoder reader

Interface board for connecting digital linear encoders to a controller, PC or local indicator: receiving scale signals, logic-level conversion and output formatting.

Task

What had to be solved

The task was to make a board that receives signals from digital linear encoders and passes measured values further: to a controller, computer or segmented LED display.

Result

What the project reached

An interface node for digital linear encoders was prepared. It closes the intermediate task between a measurement sensor and an external display or data-processing system.

Video

Short demonstration

A short recording of the device or test bench in operation.

Engineering context

Important constraints

A digital linear encoder has to be matched to a specific way of outputting or using the data.

The same measurement source may need to feed a PC, machine controller or local indicator.

Logic-level conversion and stable data transfer are more important here than unnecessary high-level functionality.

Work done

What was included

Receiving signals from digital measurement scales.

Data conversion into a convenient output format.

Interface preparation for transfer to a PC.

Optional output to a segmented LED panel.

Logic-level conversion.

Engineering project description

Board purpose

The board works as an adapter between a measurement scale and the system that has to use its readings. This can be a PC, a machine controller or a local indicator.

Integration role

The project is a small but practical interface task: the measurement device already exists, but it has to be integrated cleanly into a specific machine, controller or bench setup.

Practical value

Such interface boards are useful when an off-the-shelf sensor has the needed measurement function, but the signal format and electrical levels have to be adapted to the real system around it.
